1. Right-size your containers
If your dumpster is half empty at every pickup, you're paying to haul air. If it overflows, you're paying overage fees. Matching container size to actual volume is the fastest fix in the industry.
2. Fix your pickup frequency
Six pickups a week made sense when business was booming. If volume dropped and the schedule didn't, you're buying service you don't use. The reverse is also true — overflow fees from too few pickups often cost more than adding one.
3. Pull cardboard out of the trash
Cardboard is bulky, fills containers fast, and is a recyclable commodity. A dedicated OCC stream frees paid trash capacity and can even earn rebates at volume.
4. Audit your invoices
Waste invoices accumulate fees over time — fuel surcharges, environmental fees, administrative charges, and rate increases that nobody approved. Reading the invoice line by line is boring, which is why nobody does it, which is why it works.
5. Consider a compactor at volume
Compactors reduce the number of hauls by compressing waste. For high-volume operations, fewer hauls at a compacted rate typically beats frequent loose hauls. Rental and purchase options exist, with maintenance plans.
6. Check your contract terms
Auto-renewals, rate escalators, and termination clauses quietly lock businesses into above-market pricing. Know your renewal window before it passes.
7. Put someone in charge — or hire a broker
